The Civilized City

"The Civilized City" was a lecture George Nelson gave in 1974. Taking popular cities and tourist sites such as Paris, Venice, London, Florence, and others as examples, the series of pictures showed what makes a city livable and beautiful. Regarding his conceptual U-turn between U.S. Versus Us and "The Civilized City," Nelson ironically stated he would no longer be furious, preferring to leave this up to the youth of the day. The lecture probably also emanated from his teaching at the Harvard Graduate School, where he worked with students on urban development concepts in 1973.
